Our Founder & Executive Director - Raymond Ramirez

Since graduating from Cornell University in the early 1990s, Raymond Ramirez has published over 50 student creative writing anthologies while residing in dozens of schools with thousands of youth, through organizations like Urban Word, Teachers and Writers Collaborative, the Caribbean Cultural Center and independently. In addition to working with young people, over this time he has also facilitated workshops for parents and staff developments for various programs and schools throughout the city. Ramirez is one of the founders of the The Welfare Poets, the social justice music collective out of NYC, and a 2003 recipient of the prestigious Union Square Award for this work. Moreover, with the 2014 independent release of "No Human Being Is Illegal: The Story and Struggle of the Other Hidden People of Iceland," and the numerous musical videos he has edited and shot over the years (both personal and students'), he is also a budding documentarian/videographer.
